Day 11 - 03/19/2021 - Trench for new Sewer Line

Well, this is really starting to get messy! Somehow I didn't know the work was going to extend into the entire backyard. So today we got a new trench across the backyard, complete with jackhammering some of the remaining patio.

The cats love to be in the pictures!

 Such a hopeful mess!

Day 10 - 3/12/21 - Foundation Dig

After a couple of days of rain, the workers came back to continue digging for the foundation. Some trenches needed to be hand dug.

They were interrupted by more unexpected rain. AND the largest thunder boom many people have ever heard in Altadena. It was all the talk on social media! We were watching Dumbo and the lights sort of browned out but flashed also? We didn't realize the flash was lightning until the thunder hit. And the thunder actually shook the walls! It was crazy!

Anyway, the crew actually cleaned up a lot of dirt pile and some of the busted up concrete as well.

But the lil dumpster is already full so I don't know where they are going to put the rest?

Day 9 - 3/11/21 - Dumpster Swap!

Today was a little game called dumpster swap:

Big dumpster moves out and sits in the middle of the street (sorry, neighbors):

Then little dumpster moves in:

The driver was a Raider fan and a wizard at navigating big items in small spaces. Also? Check out those beautiful skies over Altadena!

Day 8 - 3/9/21 - Trench Digging!

Today brought the arrival of some kind of earth moving equipment. A mini backhoe? A dollhouse trencher? I don't know the names; I only know the sound it makes when it gets stuck. As small as it was, our backyard access was a real challenge.

I tried to stay out of their way as they removed fence posts and fashioned dirt ramps out of paint can buckets and inched forward and back and stopped to scratch their heads. It was an ordeal! But the what do you know, the sons of guns did it! (Note that the worker is exhaling a rainbow after such a magical feat.)

Then they dug the trenches for the new foundation.

How many times did they smash the patio cover with the digging arm of that machine? I'm not sure! (A couple, at least.) How close did they come to taking out our power lines with it? I can only guess! (Looked close to me, but what do I know?) This was pretty nerve wracking work for the homeowners and I did my best to not watch and just focus on getting a headache instead. I was so intent on not watching, I missed the extraction of the machinery!

Here's our new moat:

Just in time for a big rainstorm!

Day 7 - 3/5/21 - Jackhammer!

Today began early with a saw that cuts through concrete! So dusty!

The kids totally slept through this work for a couple of hours. Even the jackhammer right by the door! I'm jealous.

Angelina and I went for a run so I can confirm that the jack hammering could be heard a long block away, down past Olive Ave. At least everyone is working from home and got to hear that on all their zoom calls all day!

The patio is being cut away and removed to make way for the new foundation to be poured. It was pretty loud all day. In the afternoon, I watched Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs with the kids and we couldn't hear a thing Grumpy said. Most of this work was done by one guy!

Progress is messy.

Day 6 - 3/2/21 - Rain Prep

The Electrician came out today to clean up all the random wires that used to be inside the walls. Good to get the old wiring removed right before a day of rain! It looks much cleaner:

We also got a little rain cover for the open part of the roof.

Almost ready for some of that Southern California Winter Weather! Also, Martin prepped the laundry room.

Normally I am rooting for a really nice storm, but I'm fine with keeping it minimal at this time. Thanks for your understanding, Mother Nature.

Day 5.5 - 2/27/21 - Chalk It Up

No construction today but Martin and the kids chalked out the plans for the addition onto the patio and it was super fun.

It was nice to get a more visual representation of where we are headed.

Day 19 - 4/10/21 - Bolts and Tie Downs

We are trying to get ready for the next inspection! The engineer could not sign off on this work until he witnessed it, so a large crew ca...
